In the United States each year, obesity, unhealthy eating, and physical inactivity account for over 300,000 preventable deaths from chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. This situation reflects the fact that over half of American adults are overweight or obese and have inappropriate eating and activity habits. Unless changes are made, there will be an even greater prevalence of obesity and chronic health problems in future years as obesity among children and teens has nearly doubled during the past two decades to over 15% nationally.
Statistics for our own community are just as alarming. Of Green Bay’s 27,000 children, one in approximately seven is overweight.
Through a grant from the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, the
Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay
hopes to begin to change these statistics through the Triple Play program. The Triple Play program teaches youth about making healthier choices. Using a holistic approach that incorporates the Mind, Body, and Soul, Triple Play educates children and teens about good nutrition, making physical fitness a daily practice, and developing individual strengths and good character.
The goal of the program is to provide young people with the knowledge and experiences that will lead them to adopt lifelong healthy behaviors.
