Studies indicate that crime prevention measures can significantly reduce crime and are up to 10 times more cost-effective than traditional control measures. The Crime Prevention Foundation of Brown County
was formed to help prevent crime by supporting programs which successfully engage a variety of at-risk populations such as children and teens.
The Crime Prevention Foundation increases public awareness of and provides financial assistance to crime prevention programs in Brown County, Wisconsin. Financial support is given to existing programs and for the implementation of new crime prevention programs that break the crime triangle. For a crime to occur, these three elements are necessary:
1. DESIRE to commit the crime;
2. ABILITY to commit the crime; and
3.OPPORTUNITY to commit the crime.
Programs or projects receiving grants from the fund must aim to reduce or eliminate at least one of these three elements.
Mission of the Organization/Fund:
The Mission of the CPF of BC is to provide a long-term source of funds for local crime prevention programs.
Summary of Background of the Organization/Fund:
Founded in June of 2001, we are the first Crime Prevention Foundation in the United States.
The CPF of BC is administered by a volunteer Board of Directors, consisting of local law enforcement officials, school administrators, media, and interested citizens. No one receives payment for services. All funds are managed by the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. Our web site is www.crimepreventionfoundation.com
The Foundation provides funds to support local crime prevention programs, such as DARE; CrimeStoppers; specialty YMCA programs; alcohol free High School graduation parties; etc. To date, we have helped fund 64 Crime Prevention Programs in Brown County and have given $88,000 in grants. Grant requests are solicited on an annual basis; and are announced at a Crime Fighters Luncheon in the fall.
The Crime Prevention Foundation will continue to work to achieve three primary objectives:
1. To increase the public's awareness of, and appreciation for, the crime prevention programs within Brown County;
2. To raise funds for the Foundation and invest them for long term growth; and
3. To be a long term source of funding for Crime Prevention programs within Brown County.
Our original goal, and it's still our target, is to raise $1.0 million; and use the invested earnings to fund local crime prevention programs. As of May, 2011, we have $591,000 in our Foundation account.
